For a big part of my childhood, my family watched TV on only three channels: 3 - NBC, 6 - CBS and 13 - PBS. Hard to believe in this day of hundreds of TV channels. How did we ever survive with so little to watch on TV? There were however, periods of time when I was able to watch cable channels either at my house (we'd get cable for a while and then get rid of it) or at a friend's house. Those times were real treats of TV viewing variety. One show I was sort of crazy about was Gilligan's Island.
During those times when we did have cable TV at our house, I'd record episodes of Gilligan's Island to audio cassette and then listen to them over and over and over again until I had them memorized word for word.
I recently watched a few of those episodes and while I don't have all the words on the tip of my tongue like I used to, I still know a lot of the words. The weird thing is watching the episodes as well as listing to them. When you only hear them over and over again, the action captured by the camera is forgotten.
Gilligan's Island has another connection to my March blog this year. I am doing these daily caricatures as a kind of countdown to my 50th birthday. I was born in 1964 and Gilligan's Island also made it's debut that same year. Happy 50th to the show! It's sad that only Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) and Ginger (Tina Louise) are still with us.
